Projects and Initiatives

The Eastern Ontario Model Forest has over 30 projects and initiatives underway, ranging from courses for landowners on timely topics and educational programming for children, to monitoring and reporting on the state of the forests in eastern Ontario.

All of our projects relate in some way to our Phase III objectives. For more information on all of our projects and how they fit with our objectives, download this year's workplan. For an overview of the accomplishments in each project last year, download our Annual Report.

Many of our projects have their own Web sites showcasing progress and results.

Caring For Your Land Workshop Series

Caring For Your Land Workshop Series

A collection of workshop materials and information on a wide variety of topics, including climate change, private woodlot management, insects and disease, and much, much more.

The EOMF uses a carefully selected set of criteria and indicators to monitor and report on the state of the forest - and the greater natural landscape - in eastern Ontario.

A collaborative effort to use GIS technology to identify and classify woodlands based on ecological value, this study is intended to help municipalities develop their natural heritage policies within their official plans.

The Eastern Ontario Urban Forest Network is a working group of communities, agencies, and individuals in eastern Ontario who have an interest in promoting healthy urban forests.

The sustainable forest certification initiative is a ground-breaking project that brings private woodlot owners together to learn about and apply the concepts of sustainable forest management under the principles and criteria of FSC certification.

The Bog to Bog project is working with landowners to protect and link isolated natural areas with a series of forested corridors, and to help them understand how their property can be a valuable part of a larger natural landscape.

Whether it's sustainable forest management techniques or proper agricultural tillage practices, or even how to attract butterflies to your garden, there are literally hundreds of demonstration sites within the EOMF.

It's clear that there is an interconnected landscape that spans across administrative boundaries; this project aims at growing relationships on both sides of the international border. Find out more by visiting the project Web site.

This Web site summarizes Ontario’s forest science efforts following the 1998 ice storm that devastated parts of Ontario, Quebec, and the northeastern US. In addition we have tried to include other pertinent ice storm-related information such as photos, maps, publications and links to other useful sites.

The Observer Network is a group of woodland owners who participate in a biodiversity monitoring network. Learn about the program and sign up!
