Continuing Education for Forest Managers: A Summary

This report summarizes recommendations to assist in the development of a framework for the incorporation of sustainable forestry concepts into continuing education programs for forest resource managers in the Eastern Ontario Model Forest. The information in this report will provide a model for similar continuing education initiatives on other model forest sites.

The Role of Photo Interpretation in Providing Forest Resource Information for Integrated Resource Management

A key requirement for IRM is an up-to-date forest inventory that describes, classifies and maps forest stands at a resolution and accuracy sufficient to support ecosystem-based resource planning and management. This document addresses the role of photo interpretation in supplying the information requirements for IRM.

Relative Density Guidelines - Hardwood Crop Planning for Eastern Ontario Hardwood Stands

Relative Density Guidelines - Hardwood Crop Planning for Eastern Ontario Hardwood Stands
This paper compares current stand modelling techniques, in terms of both model design and performance. The paper also describes procedures to be followed in developing relative density measures and stocking guidelines appropriate to forests within the Eastern Ontario Model Forest. An annotated bibliography of the effects of relative density on timber production and wildlife habitat is included in the final pages of the report.

Trial of the Model 1400 Track Bandit Chipper for Row Removal in Softwood Plantations

Trial of the Model 1400 Track Bandit Chipper for Row Removal in Softwood Plantations
In eastern Ontario, many softwood plantations require thinning to avoid stagnation and continued growth of the trees. This report investigates whether directional felling followed by in-stand chipping is a viable alternative to the current practive of directional felling followed by partial delimbing and bucking.

Effects of Forest Management Practices and Forest Cutting History on the Songbird Communities of Mature Hardwood Forest Stands, Lake Opinicon, Leeds/Frontenac Cos., Ontario

Effects of Forest Management Practices and Forest Cutting History on the Songbird Communities of Mature Hardwood Forest Stands, Lake Opinicon, Leeds/Frontenac Cos., Ontario
Recent population declines for many species of neotropical migrant birds, attributed in part to habitat loss and alteration, have spurred interest in better understanding how our use of forests affects the well-being of the biological communities they support. This report addresses the effects of forest management practives on the songbird community in the Eastern Ontario Model Forest region, with emphasis on mature hardwood forest stands in the area of Lake Opinicon.
