The Eastern Ontario Model Forest wishes all of its members, partners, friends and supporters a healthy, happy and safe holiday season!  We thank you all for your ongoing support and wish you all the best for 2014.

We also hope that you may contemplate giving someone on your Christmas list the gift of ‘forest sustainability’ by choosing to support EOMF, by extension, with our Special Occasion option.  Here you can select one of many high-quality e-cards - including one of four new winter scenes (thanks to accomplished photographers and long-time EOMF supporters Simon Lunn and Martha Copestake) and then designate your contribution amount, personalize your message, and we will send the e-card to the recipient on your behalf.  Special Occasion cards can also be used to celebrate birthdays, graduations, retirement, births - or any occasion that comes to your mind!  Please click HERE to go to view our e-cards and Special Occasion offering.  Happy Holidays!

A few seats remain for this Wednesday's annual Annual Christmas Forest Seminar - co-hosted by the Eastern Ontario Model Forest and the Canadian Institute of Forestry, Ottawa Valley Section. Together we have pulled together an interesting and compelling Agenda revolving around a relevant and topical theme that addresses the question: Wood; the Ultimate Green Building Material?  A line-up of informed and interesting speakers will explore the current and diverse challenges, initiatives and actions needed to increase the use of wood in green construction.

We hope that you will join us on December 12 at Purvis Hall on the Kemptville Campus of the University of Guelph for a morning of insightful presentations and discussions, topped off by a hot turkey buffet!  Cost is $30.00, which includes hot turkey and trimmings buffet lunch, morning coffee and goodies.

On October 12th the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) was pleased to host an Ibero-American Model Forest delegation visiting the Ottawa area.  Visitors travelled from their Model Forests situated in Guatemala, Costa Rica and Chile and were accompanied by their supporters from the Ottawa-based International Model Forest Network Secretariat and CUSO.

The morning consisted of a field visit to the Forest Stewardship Council® FSC®-certified sugarbush of Gary Ivens (SD&G Certified Forest Owners).  Here, the group learned about the EOMF’s Forest Certification Program, including the certification of non-timber forest products and in particular our region’s famed maple syrup – a sample of which they each took home as a tasty souvenir of their visit.

Throughout the course of discussions there was an exchange of perspectives relating to both opportunities for Model Forests, such as the further strengthening of international collaborations, as well as some of the current challenges we all face like the need to secure stable funding sources.  The mutual exchange of experiences and ideas was seen to be very valuable by all participants.

On December 3 and 4th the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) hosted a seven-person Polish delegation exploring the possibility of establishing Model Forests in two regions in Poland.  They were accompanied by Brian Bonnell of the International Model Forest Network Secretariat.

Day 1 consisted of a context-setting discussion at Limerick Interpretive Centre, during which the group was introduced to some of the ‘fundamentals’ of the EOMF, including our governance structure, decision-making processes, and key activities and projects.  This was followed by a roundtable discussion on the value of the EOMF (and Model Forest approach) as well as an overview of the structure and activities of the Canadian Model Forest Network.

Geoff McVey, EOMF Board member and Manager of Limerick Forest, gave an overview of this showcase community forest – certified under the EOMF Forest Certification Program.  He spoke to the importance of Limerick’s collaborative partnership with the EOMF and how it has enabled them to tap into a wide breadth of expertise; undertake meaningful projects that benefit the community at large (e.g., the development of interpretive signage as part of the EOMF Memorial Trail project); and raise their public profile in the community through visits by international delegations.  He also spoke of how participation in the certification program provides assurance to the community in Leeds and Grenville that Limerick is being managed taking into account the broad array of forest values spanning ecological, social, cultural, and economic pillars of sustainability.

The Eastern Ontario Model Forest is pleased to offer six new charitable donation options to our friends, partners and supporters!  These are: Annual Membership; Corporate Sponsorship; One-Time Donations; Special Occasions; Monthly Giving; and, Living Legacy.  All categories of giving offer valuable charitable tax receipts for you or your organization, along with various category-specific benefits, and the option to appear on our new Donor Wall.  An overview is described below or click HERE for more information, or to donate, using our secure online payment system.

Your ongoing financial support is most appreciated and needed more than ever as our core Forest Communities Program funding draws to a close.  We continue to be very grateful for all of the volunteer, in-kind and moral support we’ve steadfastly received from so many over the years, and do also need these important and highly valued non-financial contributions into the future as well.

Our Corporate Sponsorship category enables the primary and secondary forest-based industries that we work to serve, and other companies interested in raising their corporate social and environmental responsibility profile, to contribute to EOMF’s ongoing sustainability and success.  It is also the place for other NGOs and government agencies to support the EOMF in whatever capacity suits. All donation sub-categories (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond) come with valuable corporate charitable tax receipts in the associated amounts, along with recognition on our Donor Wall and in our Annual Report.  They also offer varying degrees of added corporate exposure, ranging from a link to your website, to an ad on our website, profile in our EOMF E-News, automatic sponsorship of the Winter Woodlot Conference and more – all depending on the category that you choose.

This new Fundraising Campaign is being launched just in time for the holiday season and we hope that you may contemplate giving someone on your list the gift of ‘forest sustainability’ by choosing to support EOMF, by extension, with our Special Occasion option.  Here you can select one of many high-quality e-cards, thanks to renowned photographer and long-time EOMF supporter Simon Lunn, and then designate your contribution amount, personalize your message, and we will send the e-card to the recipient on your behalf.  As with all of our donation options, you will receive a charitable tax receipt for any amount over $25.  Special Occasion cards can also be used to celebrate birthdays, graduations, retirement, births - or any occasion that comes to your mind!

Those of you who are already valued EOMF members can see your new options for renewal in early 2013 when current annual dues expire.  For others contemplating Annual Membership, we offer a range of categories: Individual, Family, Patron and Lifetime Member.  A charitable tax receipt will be issued for each category.  Membership comes with voting privileges at our AGM, the option to serve on one of our Committees and/or be elected to our influential Board of Directors.  Members also receive our regular EOMF E-News, Annual Report and special event notifications to keep you informed of what’s happening at the EOMF.

We also offer the option for a donor to enroll one time and designate a ‘recurrent’ Monthly Giving amount.  Your charitable tax receipt will be forwarded in the cumulative amount at the end of each tax year.  Our simple One-Time Donation option enables a donor to receive a charitable tax receipt in any amount they choose to give as a one-time contribution.  Last but not least, our Living Legacy category establishes a fund to honour recently departed friends of the EOMF.  Please contact our General Manager, Elizabeth Holmes, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 613-258-8415, to request that a fund be established in a deceased’s name.  We will then provide the ability for others to make a charitable donation in that person’s name, to honour him or her, while lending support to EOMF’s ongoing mission and work.

Many thanks from all of us at the Eastern Ontario Model Forest.
