Conference Presentations

The Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) has been selected as one of seven sites around the world to take part in a leading-edge ecosystem services pilot project.  The news comes following a successful submission to the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) in late February.
Through certification, the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) ensures that forests and their ecosystem services are responsibly managed. FSC® is now developing new tools that will show businesses and investors that these natural benefits are being preserved and will reward participating FSC® certificate holders for doing so.

The objective of the pilot project is to evaluate the impact of forest stewardship on ecosystem services, and to set the basis for FSC® claims regarding the maintenance and enhancement of ecosystem services.  In short, it will help to demonstrate the positive impact of responsible forest management in the context of the many benefits that accrue to society as a whole.  In so doing, it will create opportunities for landowners and land managers to make verifiable claims that offer them access to ecosystem services markets.  Target ecosystem services in the pilot project include carbon sequestration and storage, biodiversity conservation, soil conservation, watershed services and recreational services.

The EOMF will work closely with Larose Forest and 2 private woodlot owners in the course of the pilot project.  For those involved, this pilot provides an opportunity to make visible the wider benefit of responsible forest management – from carbon sequestration to the important biodiversity conservation role that their forested areas play.  Tony and Ann Bull are elated to be participants in the pilot project.  “We’ve long recognized that our woodlot harbours thousands of species of flora and fauna.  It has a remarkable variety of habitats that are vital to the contribution that the woodlot provides to society at large.”
As an early forerunner in exploring forest certification in Canada, the EOMF is honoured to be part of this pioneering project.  We look forward to learning from the experiences of the other pilot sites in Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Australia, Peru and Chile.
