Jim and Donna Fischer recently achieved Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification (FSC® C018800) through the Eastern Ontario Model Forest’s (EOMF) Forest Certification Program for their property just south of Walkerton in the Municipality of Brockton. The addition of the Fischer property adds approximately 37 acres to the growing list of private woodlots now certified under the EOMF Forest Certification Program and represents the first certified woodlands in the Municipality of Brockton.

FSC® is an international, membership-based, non-profit organization that supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of forests. FSC® has developed a global certification system for forests and forest products, ensuring the existence of forest areas through responsible forest management. Use of the FSC® logo is intended to signify that the products come from well managed forest, giving consumers the option of supporting responsible forestry.

Since purchasing the property in 1977, the Fischer’s have been very active in undertaking best management practices and increasing their knowledge base regarding forest management and the natural environment. Under the expert guidance of Jim Penner, Forest Manager with the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority, several tree planting and woodlot thinning activities have taken place. Many of the hilly areas on the property, prone to soil erosion, have been reforested primarily to various conifer tree species. As well, a gravelly area that was less suited for crop production has been reforested. As a result, forest cover on the property has grown from 12 acres in 1977 to 37 acres today. Their 12-acre hardwood woodlot thinned in 2015, to improve growth on the best quality tress, is now being tapped for maple syrup production.

The Fischer family are no strangers to the value of forest certification and working with the EOMF, having certified several hundred acres of recreational property in the Parry Sound area back in 2006. Entering their home property into the EOMF - Forest Certification Program was a logically next step at ensuring sustainable forest management practices. As a bonus, their property is adjacent to a certified forest owned and managed by the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority.

“We have always had an interest in and respect for the natural environment and a desire to improve the overall environmental health for the next generation”, said Jim Fischer, “Forest Certification under the EOMF Program provides us with an assurance that we are actively part of the much larger process of insuring all stages from growing to consuming forest products are sustainable and based on best management practices. In addition, I can’t overstate the important contribution made by Jim Penner in providing us with management advice and guidance over many years and several projects.”

Jim Hendry, Forest Certification Coordinator for the EOMF views forest certification as an important tool to implement sustainable forest management. “Independent international standards are accountable and ensure credible forest management activities for the woodlot owner and forest product consumers. Managing our forests to a world class standard while providing FSC® certified wood to local mills is both good for the environment and the local economy. The certification of Jim and Donna Fischer’s property will hopefully lead to a greater awareness of the importance of forests and a network of certified forests throughout Ontario,” says Jim Hendry.

EOMF Forest Certification Program includes 110 private woodlot owners, 14 community forests, 2 private commercial forest owners and 5 maple syrup producers totaling over 83,000 hectares or 205,000 acres.
