Each year a forest management audit is performed on the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) Forest Certification Program to verify sustainable forestry practices. This years’ audit took place between June 12th and 15th on several community forest and private forest properties throughout eastern and southern Ontario. The audit, conducted by Rainforest Alliance, evaluates the EOMF’s systems and performance against the Forest Stewardship Council® (FCS®) forest management standards and policies.

The auditors found the EOMF Forest Certification Program to be in full compliance with the FSC® standards, signaling top grades!

“We could not have asked for a better result, this clearly demonstrates that our members are managing their forests to a very high standard”, said Jim Hendry, Coordinator of the Forest Certification Program for the EOMF. “This speaks to the quality of forest management activities undertaken by our community forest and private woodlot owners”.

Five Community Forests participated in the audit this year, including United Counties of Prescott and Russell (Larose Forest), United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Grey Sauble Conservation Authority, Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority and the Town of Oakville. Three private woodlot owners also participated in the audit process.

The audit team also noted the good work being undertaken by Community Forest owners, including considerable investments in enhancing multiple uses of the forest for present and future generations.

The EOMF - Forest Certification Program achieved FSC® certification (FSC® C018800) in 2002. The Program extends across eastern and southern Ontario and includes private forest owners and community forests, totalling more than 80,000 hectares. The FSC® is an international, membership-based, non-profit organization that supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests.

The EOMF is a not-for-profit, charitable organization. It works with government, landowners, industry, First Nations, non-government organizations and others to sustain and manage private forest resources.
