Welcome to the
Eastern Ontario Model Forest!

As one of fourteen model forests in Canada’s Model Forest Network, the Eastern Ontario Model Forest works with government, landowners, industry, First Nations and other stakeholders to develop new ways to sustain and manage our forest resources.

The EOMF champions the belief that we all have a stake in ensuring that the environmental, economic, cultural and social values of Eastern Ontario's forests are maintained for the benefit of all, now and in the future.

The principle behind the model forest program is simple: demonstrate how partners, representing a diversity of forest values, can work together to achieve sustainable forest management using innovative, region-specific approaches.

Forests for Seven Generations

Adopting the philosophy of the First Nations people, the EOMF considers each decision and new technology bearing in mind how it will affect "seven generations".

By learning from those who came before, and by considering those who come after us, the EOMF hopes that there will always be plenty of trees in our forest.

Forest Communities Program

2007 marked a new beginning for the Eastern Ontario Model Forest as we celebrated becoming a Forest Communities Program (FCP) site.  The FCP is a $25-million, 5-year program that funds 11 sites (all model forests) across Canada.  It is administered by the Canadian Forest Service within Natural Resources Canada, and is designed to assist community-based partnerships to develop and share knowledge, strategies and tools to adjust to forest sector transition and to take advantage of emerging forest-based opportunities.

In support of the objectives of the FCP, the EOMF will provide a vital platform for fostering collaborative community efforts that promote and support sustainable forest communities in the lower Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin.

Enhancing Species at Risk Habitat in Your Eastern Ontario Woodlot
This booklet is intended as a tool to assist landowners in enhancing species at risk habitat. It begins with a discussion of what constitutes a species at risk, why species are ‘at risk’, and how you, as a landowner, can play a central role in ensuring the survival of species at risk. Woodland habitats used by species at risk are then reviewed in some detail. The lion’s share of the booklet is devoted to a discussion of the practical ways in which you can enhance species at risk habitat in your woodlot. Legislative considerations are reviewed in brief.

A new module in the Caring for your Land Workshop Series has just been released and is available online.
